Motivations for Citations and Hyperlinks
This study is a chronological and analytical review of motivations for citations and hyperlinks by answering the following questions: What forces motivate an author in citing/linking other authors whose works were used during his/her research? Can a list of cited/linked works serve as a reliable guide to an author's credibility? These and other questions about the role of citation/link and the citing/linking process seemed intriguing. Since comparative studies of motivations for citations and hyperlinks have been inadequate and knowledge of variables and factors implicit in the citation and hyperlink processes is limited, it is the purpose of this study to explore motivations for citations and hyperlinks. This motivation study aims at facilitating a better understanding of the nature of the hyperlink and citation processes and their contribution to knowledge construction and information dissemination on the Web. This study finally investigates the differences between hyperlinking and citing motivations in scholarly environments.
